GALENA – Floyd Central hurler Emmy Miller fired a one-hitter as the Highlanders overpowered Bedford North Lawrence 12-1 in six innings during high school softball action on Tuesday.
Miller surrendered a solo home run to BNL’s Kendall Graves in the top of the first, then silenced the Stars the rest of the way while striking out 11.
The Highlanders, ranked No.8 in Class 4A, scored seven runs in the bottom of the first to take control, then triggered the mercy rule when Breleigh Lockhart launched a walk-off, two-run home run in the sixth.
“That first inning, there wasn’t a lot we could do,” BNL coach Brad Gilbert said. “They hit it where we weren’t. There was no slowing them down.”
Floyd’s Nora Koehler had two hits and three RBIs, while Lockhart finished with three RBIs. The Highlanders (14-4) pounded out 13 hits, and BNL was also guilty of four errors that allowed three unearned runs.
”The one thing I’m proud of is we didn’t quit,” Gilbert said. “The whole team kept fighting and grinding, trying to make plays. It’s disappointing, but we have a lot of games left.”
The Stars (9-6) will host Charlestown on Wednesday.
