BEDFORD—The White River Humane Society (WRHS) has released a snapshot of its work in 2024. The snapshot reveals the significant number of animals it has taken in and rehomed while also underscoring the critical need for a new shelter facility. In 2024, WRHS cared for 945 animals, including 550 cats and 395 dogs.
The dedicated efforts of WRHS resulted in 611 adoptions and the successful return of 130 animals to their owners. Additionally, 172 animals were transported out of the shelter, contributing to the organization’s impressive 96% “Out Alive Rate,” a testament to their commitment to saving animal lives. These efforts came at a cost, with year-to-date expenses exceeding $491,956, covering essential operational needs such as utilities, insurance, payroll, veterinary care, medicine, food, and supplies.

However, the success in animal care is being hampered by the limitations of the current shelter, which was built over 30 years ago. WRHS emphasizes that animal welfare practices have significantly evolved since then. The current facility faces numerous challenges, including overcrowding and an outdated kennel and shelter design, which unfortunately contribute to animal stress. In 2023 alone, the shelter took in over 1,000 animals, further straining the aging infrastructure.
The existing building shows considerable wear and tear, with chipped paint, rusting metal fencing, and a failing plumbing and septic system. The inadequate space and lack of functional resources also hinder the dedicated staff’s daily efforts. WRHS urgently needs a new shelter explicitly designed to prioritize the health and well-being of the animals in its care.
A new facility would provide a better environment for the animals, staff, and visitors. The current lack of space and the challenging landscape of the existing property severely limit the ability to accept on-site volunteers. Furthermore, the absence of a designated area for potential adopters to meet shelter pets creates obstacles in facilitating adoptions. The design of a new shelter aims to resolve these issues, paving the way for a more robust volunteer program and improved adoption processes.
To make this vision a reality, the White River Humane Society is actively seeking donations for its New Building Fund. A generous benefactor has pledged to match donations up to a remarkable $1 million, significantly boosting the organization’s fundraising efforts. This matching donation provides a powerful incentive for community members to contribute, effectively doubling the impact of their support and bringing the WRHS closer to achieving its goal of a modern, improved shelter.
