INDIANA– Time is running out for Indiana residents to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card. The federal REAL ID Act will go into full effect on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, requiring all citizens to possess compliant identification to board domestic flights, enter federal facilities, and access specific secure federal sites.
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005. It implements a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission to establish federal standards for the issuance of identification documents like driver’s licenses and ID cards. The aim is to enhance security measures nationwide.
Beginning next month, travelers attempting to board domestic flights must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card at airport security checkpoints. The requirement applies to those entering federal buildings and accessing secure federal locations. Individuals who do not have a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative will be denied entry.
Fortunately, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts alternative forms of identification. These include a valid U.S. passport, military ID, and other specific documents listed on the TSA website.

Indiana residents can quickly check if their current driver’s license or identification card is REAL ID compliant. Look for a star in the upper right-hand corner of the card. If the star is present, your ID meets the federal requirements.
Those who do not yet have a REAL ID-compliant card are urged to visit their local Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) as soon as possible to apply for one. Be sure to bring the necessary documentation, typically including proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of Indiana residency.
With the May 7, 2025, deadline rapidly approaching, Indiana residents are encouraged to act now to ensure they have the proper identification for air travel and access to federal facilities. Failure to obtain a REAL ID or acceptable alternative will result in travel disruptions and denial of entry to specific locations.
To obtain a REAL ID:
- Visit an Indiana DMV office
- Provide proof of identity, like a birth certificate or passport
- Provide proof of Social Security number through utility bill, W-2, etc.
- Provide two proofs of Indiana residency through utility bill or lease agreement
The DMV encourages individuals who do not have a REAL ID-compliant license or ID to update before the deadline.
