Avian Flu detected in multiple Indiana Counties, affecting local poultry operations

INDIANA— Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in several Indiana counties, including Allen, Adams, Jay, and Jackson, according to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH). The virus has affected multiple commercial flocks in recent months.

In Jay County, a commercial egg layer operation and multiple turkey farms have tested positive for HPAI. Jackson County reported infections at a commercial egg production facility owned by Rose Acre Farms. Allen County also confirmed cases at a commercial egg layer operation, while Adams County reported infections at a commercial turkey farm.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the risk to the general public to be low. However, health officials advise avoiding contact with sick waterfowl and other wildlife. Residents who encounter sick or dead waterfowl are encouraged to report them at on.IN.gov/sickwildlife.

BOAH said that individuals exposed to infected animals who develop symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Health officials also recommend cooking poultry products to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit and consuming only pasteurized milk to minimize health risks.
