BIRDSEYE – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the beauty of Patoka Lake with two exciting kayaking events in April.
On April 12, the DNR will offer its Spring Kayak Tour, allowing participants to paddle along scenic Patoka Lake while learning about local wildlife and the ecosystem. A Naturalist will lead the tour, which departs at Noon from the South Lickfork Boat Ramp, located at 3084 N. Dillard Road in Birdseye.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own kayaks and flotation devices to the tour. Before the event, remember to purchase a 2025 non-motorized lake permit. The permit costs just $5 and can be obtained at state parks, reservoirs, and forests or purchased online at Mother Nature’s Mercantile.
Later in the month, on April 30 at 12:30 p.m., the DNR will host a beginner kayaking lesson at Patoka Lake, perfect for those new to the sport. This event, open to individuals ages 12 and older, will cover essential kayak operation, gear introduction, and the best spots to paddle on the lake. Various styles of kayaks and paddles will be available to try, and all necessary equipment, including life jackets, will be provided.
Advance registration is required for the kayaking lesson, which costs $5 per person. To sign up, call the Nature Center at 812-685-2447. Additionally, visitors must pay a vehicle entrance fee of $7 for Indiana residents and $9 for nonresidents.
These events offer the perfect opportunity to explore Patoka Lake’s stunning natural beauty, learn about the environment, and improve kayaking skills. Don’t miss out on these outdoor adventures this spring!
