PIKE COUNTY, KY— Catastrophic flooding has devastated Eastern Kentucky, with Pike County bearing the brunt of the disaster. The death toll has risen to at least 20, including a 2-year-old boy and his grandparents, according to local authorities. Thousands of residents are now without power, clean water, or shelter.
The severe weather began on February 15, 2025, when over a month’s worth of rain fell within 24 hours, leading to unprecedented flooding. Entire neighborhoods were submerged, and numerous rock and mudslides were reported across the region. In Pike County, the Levisa Fork River crested at 46.68 feet, severely damaging homes and infrastructure.

Rescue operations have been ongoing, with over 1,000 individuals saved from the floodwaters. However, the challenging conditions have hampered efforts, and officials fear the death toll may rise as search and rescue missions continue.
In response to the disaster, several organizations have mobilized to provide aid. The American Red Cross, Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) Foundation, and local groups are offering shelter, food, medical care, and other essential services to those affected. Financial contributions to the ARH Foundation Relief Fund will directly support these efforts.
Community centers, such as the Pikeville-Pike County Welcome Center, are accepting donations of new winter clothing, blankets, and cleaning supplies. These items will be distributed through the Pike County Government to ensure they reach those in need.
Local initiatives, including Pike County Relief Services, are also coordinating assistance. Donations can be mailed to Pike County Relief Services at 281 Thompson Rd., Box 3473, Pikeville, KY 41501.
Governor Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency and is urging residents to avoid flooded areas and prioritize safety. The governor emphasized the importance of community support during this crisis and encouraged those who can to assist in relief efforts.
