Historic Indiana floods anniversary prompts warning for 2025

INDIANA – Twenty years after devastating floods struck Indiana in 2005, state officials are warning of potential flooding risks in early 2025.

The National Water Prediction Service forecasts minor flooding along the Wabash and White rivers in central and southern Indiana, with moderate flooding expected in Gibson, Jackson, Knox, and Pike counties.

The 2005 floods, which followed severe winter storms, resulted in federal disaster declarations for most Indiana counties and over $7.5 million in flood insurance claims. Despite every county experiencing flooding in the past two decades, only 1% of Indiana households currently maintain flood insurance.

State officials encourage residents to assess their flood risk and consider insurance coverage through resources available on the Indiana Flood Insurance page. Additional preparedness information can be found on the Get Prepared Flood Safety page
