Don Charles Ellis, 78, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born June 17, 1946, in Scottsburg, he was the son of Laurence and Helen M. (Vaught) Ellis. He married Judy Ann Miller on January 28, 1977, and she preceded him in death on October 6, 2024.
Don was a 1965 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250. Don retired from Crane Army in 2006. He had previously worked as a Carpenter and a home builder. Don was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. He was a 40-year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F.&A.M. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and making art and was an avid collector.
Surviving are his children, Tony (Marcy) Ellis of Mitchell, Candace (Brad) Robertson of Seymour, Jim (Angie) Tomlinson of Mitchell, Mike (Dawnetta) Atchison of Mitchell, Jay (Machelle) Tomlinson of Bloomington, and Jon (Lee Ann) Tomlinson of St. Charles, Missouri; grandchildren, Victoria (C.J.) Fields of Mitchell, Benjamin Ellis of New Albany, Cody Williams of Brownstown, Kaitlyn Williams of Brownstown, Jessica (A.J.) Shelton of Mitchell, Ian Tomlinson of North Carolina, Caleb Smales of Mitchell, Marcus (Aloma) Atchison of Navarre, Florida, Zach Atchison of Mitchell, Jaymie (Ryan) Terry of Bedford, Justin (Ginger) Tomlinson of Mitchell, Sarah (Edwin) Ayala-Reyes of England, Alex Tomlinson of Vincennes, Kelcey (Ally) Byers of St. Charles, Missouri, Andrew (Taylor) Tomlinson of Mitchell, and Joel (Emily) Tomlinson of Las Vegas, Nevada; 19 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Marilyn (Donnie) Tirey of Oolitic, Eddie (Linda) Ellis of Mitchell, Becky (Ronnie) Pierce of Mitchell, and Sarah Sue McPherson of Mitchell.
His parents, wife, granddaughter, Jana Lynn Tomlinson, and siblings, Dean Ellis and Katie Mullinax, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Steve Jones officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F.&A.M. will conduct a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.
