
JASPER CO. – The Indiana State Police have identified the man killed in a police-involved shooting in Jasper County as Matthew W. Huttle, 42, of Hobart, Indiana. The incident occurred during a traffic stop on Sunday, January 26, near the Pulaski County line.
According to preliminary investigations by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post, the shooting took place around 4:15 p.m. when a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on State Road 14, east of County Road 475 E. During the stop, an altercation erupted as the officer attempted to arrest Huttle, who reportedly resisted. Investigators confirmed that Huttle had a firearm during the traffic stop.
Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson issued a statement addressing the incident: “For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer-involved shooting. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol and our policy in these situations.” Sheriff Williamson expressed condolences to Huttle’s family, noting that “any loss of life is traumatic to those close to Mr. Huttle.” The sheriff indicated he would release the officer’s name once approved by State Police detectives.
The morning following the incident, an autopsy was completed. The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office. Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review.
The investigation is being coordinated through the Indiana State Police Lowell Post under the supervision of Public Information Officer Sgt. Glen Fifield.
