Stars slip past Seymour for third place in HHC

Kenley Craig and the Stars stopped Seymour to finish third in the HHC tournament.

BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence claimed third place in the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament with a 3-2 victory over Seymour during girls high school tennis action on Saturday.

The Stars, who suffered a 5-0 loss to the Owls on April 30, won the bottom singles and a three-set thriller at No.1 doubles to post the first win in the rivalry in Joni Stigall’s tenure as coach at BNL.

“I’m so happy for these girls,” Stigall said. “They all played so hard. To get beat 0-5, to coming out today with a win for third place in conference, is something to be so proud of.”

Ava McKinney recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Rose Kruse at No.2 singles, while Nadia Anderson avenged an earlier two-set loss to Claire Combs with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No.3.

BNL’s Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge also reversed a previous setback to Seymour’s Addison Hunsley and Kelsea Hunsley, winning a tense tiebreaker in the third set for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory for the clinching team point.

“Nadia and Ava came out determined to win,” Stigall said. “And 1 doubles wanted to capitalize on last night’s win (against Jeffersonville in the semifinal). They accomplished that. This was a big win heading into sectional play next week. We’re ready, and excited to see how we do.”

Seymour’s Ava Sunbury topped Jessie Faubion 6-0, 6-2 at No.1 singles, while Tori Fee and Emma Woodard fought off Meryl Klein and Emma Conover 7-5, 6-3 at No.2 doubles.

BNL will learn its sectional fate when the IHSAA conducts the postseason draw on Monday.
