Intoxicated woman nearly strikes utility pole and is arrested

BEDFORD – An Oolitic woman was arrested on Friday, May 3, 2024, after Bedford Police Sgt. Uebelhoer stopped her vehicle at 2:11 a.m.

Sgt. Uebelhoer spotted the driver traveling south on Lincoln Avenue in a 20212 Nissan Altima. The officer was following behind the car when the driver, who was approaching the intersection of 12th Street, abruptly crossed the double yellow line and jerked back into the lane of travel. The driver then swerved to the far right side of the road and nearly struck a utility pole on 12th Street between L and M Street.

Sgt. Uebelhoer then initiated a traffic stop. The driver, 46-year-old Kaci Hanks, turned onto M Street and stopped at M Street and Fairgrounds Lane.

Hanks told the officer she was trying to go to a friend’s house. Sgt. Uebelhoer said Hanks smelled of alcohol, had glassy eyes, and had poor manual dexterity when retrieving her license and registration.

Hanks said she had drank “two shooters of vodka around 2:00 p.m. the previous day.”

Hanks failed several field sobriety tests. Police say Hanks nearly fell over after completing the test.

Officer Crulo administered a preliminary breath test. Hanks had a blood-alcohol level of 0.232 percent. She was detained on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment.

Officer Blackburn transported her to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw and to be medically cleared. Once cleared, she was transported to jail.
