The Board of Zoning Appeals listened to a call for an exception in fire code

BEDFORD- The Bedford Board of Zoning Appeals met today in the Community Concourse at 1402 H Street. On the agenda was a request from Bedford resident Daniel Schmidt for a variance of use for his property located on Mitchell Road. He is requesting permission to use a fire pit that is six feet in diameter, and the city ordinance states that a fire pit should be no bigger than three feet in diameter and fires should be no taller than two feet. Bedford Fire Chief Luke Pinnick was on hand and had been to the property to check out the lot in question to assess the proposed placement of the pit.

Chief Pinnick endorsed Schmidt’s enlarged pit, owing to the property’s large size. He did, however, raise some questions about pit placement in relation to powerlines, and Mr. Schmidt assured the board it would not be an issue. A motion was made to approve the use of a six-foot pit if all prerequisites were met, and it was passed. The resident must now have the area inspected by the fire department and apply for a permit to use the pit.
