Indiana State Police investigating a fatal crash near Ball State University

MUNCIE – Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators with the Indiana State Police are investigating a crash in Muncie that killed one person and critically injured two people during a police pursuit.

On April 18, 2024, around 6:00 A.M., Henry County Sheriff John Sproles requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police Police after a crash occurred at the intersection of McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue in Muncie.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Dodge Dart, driven by Zacery Kane Antrim, 28, of Van Buren, was traveling north on State Road 3 near County Road 950 North in Henry County. The Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop for a traffic violation and suspicion of an impaired driver. The driver reportedly fled from the deputy.

The pursuit continued into Delaware County and eventually headed eastbound on McGalliard Road at a high rate of speed. The Dodge ran a red light at the intersection and collided with a white Jeep northbound on Tillotson Avenue. Officers identified the driver of the Jeep as Shanta Sharrel Schmiesing, 38, of Muncie. After the initial impact, both vehicles came to an uncontrolled rest in a grassy area northeast of the intersection.

An ambulance transported both Antrim and Schmiesing to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Schmiesing was later transferred to IU Methodist in Indianapolis. A passenger in the Dodge, later identified as Nicholas Wayne Wollum, 25, of Muncie, was pronounced dead at the scene by Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene. The coroner has notified the family.

The Indiana State Police will release the Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy’s identity later.

This investigation is active and still ongoing. Once investigators complete the investigation, the case will be presented to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
