Three juveniles arrested after late-night pursuit in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY – On April 15, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Trooper Isajczuk was patrolling in Michigan City when a dispatch went out of a shooting that had just occurred in Michigan City.

The suspect vehicle was described as a white Volkswagen Jetta and was reported as stolen.  At about the same time, Trp. Isajczuk observed a white Volkswagen Jetta traveling south on Franklin St. near the Meijer store.  The vehicle and license plate matched the description of the suspect vehicle that had been involved in the earlier reported shooting.

Tpr. Isajczuk attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, the driver refused to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed.  A pursuit was initiated and continued onto I-94 westbound into Porter County.

As the suspect passed under the State Road 49 overpass, the driver made a U-turn on the interstate and went the wrong way on I-94 onto the S.R. 49 westbound entrance ramp. As the vehicle reached the top of the ramp, it struck a concrete barrier and was disabled.

A front seat passenger exited the vehicle and ran northeast across S.R. 49.  The remaining occupants were taken into custody without further incident.  A search was conducted for the passenger that fled, but those efforts were unsuccessful in locating the individual.  A handgun was also located on the backseat floorboard of the Volkswagen.

The three suspects, all juvenile males ages 17, 15, and 12, were taken into custody. They were transported to the LaPorte County Juvenile Services Center for detainment.

The Michigan City Police Department is investigating the shooting.

The juveniles are being held on several charges.  Some of those charges include the following offenses:

  • Theft of a Firearm
  • Auto Theft
  • Resisting Law Enforcement
  • Dangerous Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle While Never Licensed
  • Reckless Driving
