Banks introduces American Students First Act

WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Jim Banks introduced the American Students First Act, legislation to prohibit the Education Department from allowing illegal immigrants to participate in the TRIO program, a collection of eight federally funded and administered college prep programs for low-income Americans, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities.

“It’s disgusting and un-American that the Biden admin wants to use tax dollars from truckers and farmers to fund college prep classes for illegal immigrants,” said Rep. Banks. “All the while, our test scores are at a record low. Rather than prepping illegals for college, the Biden admin should focus on undoing the unprecedented learning loss that happened during their school lockdowns.”

Earlier this year, Biden’s Department of Education proposed expanding eligibility for three TRIO programs to non-citizens who attended high school in the United States. This proposal follows their decision last year to grant waivers for California and Oregon to allow illegal immigrants to participate in federally funded TRIO programs in those states.

In addition to establishing citizenship requirements for eligibility, Banks’ legislation would prohibit waivers for illegal immigrants.
