Man arrested after police find 13.13 grams of meth

SPRINGVILLE – A Bedford man was arrested on a meth charge Friday, April 5, after a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped his vehicle for a headlight out.

Lawrence County Police Department Deputy Andrew Tillett was on patrol on State Road 58 West when he noticed a white 1998 Chevrolet Trailblazer with a passenger side headlight out. Deputy Tillett stopped the driver west of Armstrong Station Road.

Charles H. Owens Jr.

The driver was 57-year-old Charles H. Owen Jr.

Owen was informed why he was stopped, and Officer Tillett asked him for his driver’s license. Instead of handing the officer his driver’s license, he gave him his debit card.

While Owens was handing Officer Tillett his identification, he noticed Owen’s hands were shaking, which resulted in him dropping his driver’s license.

Deputy Kenton Carter arrived to assist.

Owen consented to officers searching his vehicle. Police found a baggy containing 13.13 grams of crystal meth inside a disposable coffee cup.

Owen said he had been in an accident earlier in the day, and his friend had hidden the meth in the coffee cup. But Owen did admit he was a meth user and finally revealed the meth was his.

Owen was arrested on a charge of possession of meth over 10 grams and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
