BNL, Edgewood battle to rainy 5-5 deadlock

ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence scrambled to a 5-5 deadlock with Edgewood before rain forced the cancellation of the final two innings during high school softball action on Tuesday.

After two rain delays, the Stars (2-6-1) took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Mustangs (4-3-1) rallied with two in the bottom of the frame to salvage a tie.

“We battled,” BNL coach Brad Gilbert said. “We had a couple of good innings where we put hits together and scored runs. That’s something we need to take away from the game.”

BNL scored twice in the first. Danielle Stegemann singled to left, and slugger Ava Ratliff launched a home run, her third of the season and 46th of her career as she continues her assault on the state record of 50.

Edgewood pulled even in the third on Jayden Stephens’ two-out RBI single and Ava LaRoche’s RBI single. The Mustangs took a 3-2 advantage in the fourth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Courtney Hamilton.

In the fifth, BNL answered with three runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Anna Williams cranked a two-run single to center, and Tori Nikirk later scored on a wild pitch. But in the bottom of the fifth, with two outs, Edgewood took advantage of an outfield error and a RBI single by Ally Bland to pull even before the rain took over.

BNL will host New Albany in its Hoosier Hills Conference opener on Thursday.
