Woman hits man with a whiskey bottle, arrested

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman is behind bars after she allegedly cracked a man in the head with a whiskey bottle.

Heather Vestal

Police arrested Heather Vestal, 52, on charges of battery with a deadly weapon, battery causing moderate bodily injury, and battery of a law enforcement officer.

On Tuesday, April 2, at 12:11 a.m. Bedford Police officers responded to the 1000 block of J Street after a report of a domestic dispute.

According to Officer Clay Blackburn, when police arrived at the apartment complex, they found a male outside bleeding from his head. He told police he had been hit with a whiskey bottle. Police said the male had a laceration on his head. An ambulance was requested to the scene. He was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for treatment.

The male said he had stopped by to talk to his girlfriend, Vestal because he had not heard from her since she had gotten off work.

The male told police, “There was no sense in the violence, and that he did not raise his hand to anybody.”

Another male, who lived at the apartment, pointed a gun at the victim and threatened to shoot him.

When officers approached the apartment complex, they heard a man yelling, “Get out, get out, and don’t come back.”

Police asked those inside to come outside.

Officer Zakry Brooking entered and spoke to Vestal and two other males. Police say Vestal was intoxicated and unsteady on her feet.

One of the men told police Vestal came to his apartment intoxicated and “acting crazy.” He said that was when her boyfriend showed up wanting to speak to Vestal. Because of Vestal’s behavior, he requested the male leave and let him handle the situation. He was concerned about getting evicted if there was trouble.

He told Vestal to go to bed to sleep it off. The male confirmed Vestal had hit her boyfriend in the head with a whiskey bottle a couple of times, and the attack was unprovoked. He told police he grabbed Vestal in an attempt to get her to stop hurting the man. He asked the male victim to leave, or he was going to call the police. He denied threatening the male with a firearm and told police he didn’t even own a gun.

Officers Brent Thompkins and Christian Anderson arrived, and Vestal was detained. While being detained, Vestal began kicking Officer Brooking, and she had to be forcibly placed in a police vehicle after refusing to get in.

Police found blood at the scene where Vestal struck the male with the whiskey bottle and found the bottle.

Vestal was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital due to her high level of intoxication. Once medically cleared, she was transported to jail.

The victim received several staples to close his wound.
