One killed, five injured in a two-vehicle accident in Sullivan

SULLIVAN – One person has died, and five others were injured after a two-vehicle crash Saturday evening.

The accident was reported just before 6:30 p.m. at Old State Road 54 and County Road 400 West near Hoosier Energy.

According to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, an SUV was traveling south on County Road 400 West. After stopping at the stop sign, the SUV pulled into the path of a car traveling east on Old State Road 54.

All five people in the SUV, driven by Julie Libke of Sullivan, were seriously injured. Libke’s mother-in-law, Mary Beth Olsen, 82, died from her injuries.

Libke’s granddaughter was flown to an Indianapolis hospital with internal injuries. The others were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Alec Tatom of Sullivan was driving the car. Deputies said he was not seriously injured, but his passenger, Alexa Pearson, was flown to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

Investigators say the glare from the setting sun may have contributed to the accident.
