Female driver arrested on OWI charges after rear-ending vehicle

BEDFORD – A Mitchell woman was arrested on Tuesday, March 12, after Bedford Police officers responded to a property damage accident at Mitchell and SandPit Roads.

According to Bedford Police Sgt. Toby Gerkin, officers found a maroon Dodge truck facing north with Patrick East standing beside the vehicle

A silver Volkswagen was facing south on Mitchell Road.

East told police he was traveling south on Mitchell Road and stopped to run left onto Sandpit Road when the Volkswagen driver struck his vehicle in the rear. Two witnesses corroborated East’s story.

Kennedy Able

The driver of the Volkswagen was 22-year-old Kennedy Able.

Able told police she was traveling south in the left lane of Mitchell Road, looking at her phone to text her mother, but when she looked back, she struck the truck.

Police say Able had difficulty staying on task and explaining what happened.

Able was checked by EMS at the scene. Able was intoxicated. She told officers she had nothing to drink since 6:00 p.m. the night before.

She did not perform any field sobriety test due to being involved in an accident and a possible head injury. She did submit to a breath test and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.165 percent. She also tested positive for marijuana.

She was transported to jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, and OWI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.15 percent.

While being transported to jail, she told police she had been drinking at work.
