David Hittle to lead Bloomington’s Planning and Transportation Department

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson appointed David Hittle as the Department of Planning and Transportation’s Director, contingent on the approval of the Plan Commission.

Hittle, who will take over the role on April 1, has served as the Executive Director for the Area Plan Commission of Tippecanoe County since 2021. He has managed 14 staff members in that role and oversees a 500-square mile, 190,000 jurisdictions, including Lafayette and West Lafayette.

From 2013 to 2021, Hittle was Johnson County’s Director of Planning and Zoning, and he also worked as a Senior Planner in the City of Indianapolis’s Department of Metropolitan Development from 2006 to 2013.

“David’s experience, leadership style, and track record of successfully managing complex projects in collaborative and customer-centric ways will be a welcomed addition to City Hall,” said Thomson.  “I am committed to building a better, more responsive, inclusive, and welcoming city, and David will be a key part of making that happen.”

A member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Hittle earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, a master’s degree from Indiana University Indianapolis, and completed coursework for a master’s degree in urban and regional planning at Ball State.
