Man runs police vehicle off the road is detained on OWI charges

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was arrested on early Friday, February 23, after Canine Officer Kenton Carter was on patrols at 12:10 a.m. and traveling north on Buddha Bypass Road when he was run off the roadway by the driver of a 2006 Mini Cooper.

Captain Harrison Fleetwood was traveling west on Rivervale Road toward the intersection of Pumphouse Road when Officer Carter advised him of the situation. The driver of the Mini Cooper had turned west on Pumphouse Road, and Capt. Fleetwood attempted to stop the driver at the intersection of Buddha Bypass and Pumphouse Road.

Officer Carter arrived on the scene to assist.

The driver was 22-year-old Landon Bohnenkamp, of Mitchell. Bohnenkamp was told he was stopped because his vehicle had a license plate light out, and he had run Officer Carter off the roadway.

Police said Bohnenkamp was intoxicated. and there were empty Michelob Ultra beer cans on the floorboard along with an open box of beer in the backseat of the vehicle. Bohnenkamp told officers he had been at a buddy’s house and he had drank three beers.

Bohnenkamp failed several field sobriety tests. He had a blood-alcohol content of .179 on a portable breath test.

Bohenkamp then admitted he and his buddy had been in Bloomington drinking and he had six beers.

He was detained on charges of operating a vehicle with a prior conviction and OWI endangerment.

His vehicle was towed by Stone City Wrecker Service.
