Need more time to file income taxes?

INDIANA- Need more time to file your state taxes? If so, you can request an extension to file your return electronically via INTIME, DOR’s customer portal.

What you need to know

You must request an extension to file no later than April 15, 2024. The new due date to file your return would be Nov. 15, 2024. Requesting an extension of time to file does not extend the deadline for paying any tax due. Interest will be added to all amounts paid after the original due date.

To avoid the cost of an additional penalty, pay 90% of the tax amount you owe by April 15 and the remainder by Nov. 15. Even if you don’t expect to owe any state tax, you should still request the extension of time to file if you can’t file by the deadline.

Request an extension

The INTIME Guide to Requesting an Extension of Time to File will walk you through the process of filing an extension. If you get a federal extension of time to file from the IRS, an extension with Indiana is automatically granted. If you owe Indiana taxes, you must submit your extension payment to DOR.

You also have the option to mail a completed Form IT-9, Application for Extension of Time to File, along with a check or money order postmarked no later than April 15, 2024.

If you aren’t sure what the [90%] amount of your extension tax payment should be, INTIME provides a worksheet to help determine that for you. Payment can be made or scheduled online with a bank account or credit/debit card.

Once your request for an extension of time to file and payment has been completed, a confirmation message will be displayed and emailed to you.
