IU recognized as a national leader in online education

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University has once again been recognized as a national leader in online education with numerous top 10 programs in the 2024 U.S. News and World Report Best Online Program rankings.

The Kelley Direct Online MBA Program at the IU Kelley School of Business was named the best online MBA program in the U.S. for the third consecutive year, with five specialty programs ranked first or second nationally. The master’s degree program at the IU School of Nursing is ranked No. 2 nationally; its online master’s degree in nursing education ranked second nationally. Four specialty programs at the IU School of Education in Bloomington also ranked in the top 10.

IU’s online bachelor’s degrees ranked first in Indiana and 20th nationally, with the full rankings reflecting the holistic quality of the IU Online degree programs.

This is the seventh time since 2013, when U.S. News began ranking online degree programs, that Kelley Direct has been ranked No. 1. This latest recognition arrives as the IU Kelley School marks the 25th anniversary of the program.

The five specialty categories that received top marks nationally at the IU Kelley School of Business are:

  • Finance, No. 1.
  • Marketing, No. 1.
  • Business and analytics, No. 2.
  • General management, No. 2.
  • Program serving veterans, No. 2.

Continuing to rise in the rankings is the IU School of Nursing, whose master’s degree program rose to second overall from 10th in 2023. In addition to the No. 2 recognition for the online master’s in nursing education, the online master’s degree in nursing administration and leadership ranked No. 11.

IU School of Nursing is currently engaged in an ambitious effort to significantly increase enrollment across its core campuses in Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Fort Wayne to meet the state’s growing need for nursing professionals.

The four specialty programs to achieve top 10 national rankings at the IU School of Education in Bloomington are:

  • Educational/instructional media design, No. 3.
  • Educational administration and supervision, No. 5.
  • Curriculum and instruction, No. 6.
  • Special education, No. 6.

IU’s degree-granting distance education programs earned “Best” status due to their high Best Online Programs rankings nationally in 16 categories. These include:

  • A “peer rating” score of 3.6 out of 4 for overall bachelor’s degree programs ranked No. 6.
  • IU East’s psychology department, No. 8, offers an online bachelor’s degree in psychology.
  • The online bachelor’s in business degree, a collaborative program offered by IU’s five regional campuses, No. 17.
  • The online master’s degree in criminal justice, offered collaboratively by the Indianapolis, East, Kokomo, Northwest, and Southeast campuses, No. 28, also earned a “peer rating” of 20th.

In total, IU had 18 national rankings in the top 20. For its 2024 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 1,600 online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs using metrics specific to online learning. The rankings only include degree-granting programs offered primarily online by regionally accredited institutions.
