BNL wrestlers to battle for semistate berths in regional

BNL’s Ethan Stancombe will compete for a semistate ticket when four Stars compete in the IHSAA regional at Bloomington South on Saturday.

BEDFORD – Four Bedford North Lawrence wrestlers will compete for tickets to the IHSAA semistate during the regional at Bloomington South on Saturday.

BNL’s Wyatt Philpott, Jorj Filler, Ethan Stancombe and Junior Arellano will need to win their first-round matches to advance. The top four (in a field of eight in each weight class) will qualify for the semistate in Evansville on Feb. 10.

Philpott, 22-10 as a sophomore at 113 pounds, will face Terre Haute South’s Leblanc Phan (13-11) in his opening match. Filler, 28-6 at 126, will clash with New Albany’s Will McLaughlin (21-16) in his must-win battle.

At 165, Stancombe (28-7) will meet North Knox’s Garrett Fuller (29-5) in the opener. Arellano (16-4) will battle Floyd Central’s Justin Brown (28-3) in the first round at 285.
