Woman arrested after trooper notices she failed to stop for flashing red light in Oolitic

OOLITIC – A Bedford woman was arrested on Saturday, January 20, after Indiana State Trooper Jesse Crane spotted an intoxicated driver in a black 2018 Chevrolet Equinox traveling north through Oolitic.

According to Trooper Crane, the female driver failed to stop at the stop sign and flashed an overhead red light at Hoosier Avenue and Main Street in Oolitic.

Trooper Crane followed the driver north on State Road 37, where she crossed the solid white fog line before and after Trogdon Lane.

The driver also crossed the dashed white line dividing the right and left travel lanes without properly signaling.

Kortni Burnette

Trooper Crane initiated a traffic stop. The driver, 35-year-old Kortni Burnette, smelled of alcohol, her speech was slurred, and her eyes were bloodshot.

Burnette stated she had been at home and Shorty’s Den drinking. She began drinking at 8:00 p.m.; her last drink was approximately midnight. She said she had drunk three twelve-ounce beers and a drink called liquid marijuana, which she described as having numerous alcoholic beverages in it. She told Trooper Crane she was traveling to Bloomington when she was stopped.

Burnette said she did not feel impaired and admitted to being on her phone as a reason for her inability to maintain her lane.

Burnette failed several field sobriety tests and was detained

Kortni Burnette, 35, Bedford, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 or greater, and was cited for disregarding a stop light and unsafe lane movement and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
