Morgan County Sheriff Deputy shot in the shoulder during response call

MARTINSVILLE – A Morgan County sheriff’s deputy was shot and injured early Tuesday morning while responding to a home in Martinsville, police say.

Morgan County Sheriff Richard Myers reported that Deputy Mallory Schwab is in stable condition after being transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Deputy Schwab was injured after the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 7:30 a.m. from a teenager expressing concern for a male who had posted on social media about possibly harming themselves.

When deputies arrived, they didn’t receive an answer at the door. Shortly after, a male fired a shot from inside the house, hitting Schwab once in the shoulder.

Sheriff Myers says there was no threat to the community. Tactical teams from Morgan County and Johnson County remained at the scene. The Indiana State Police will be continuing the investigation.

Schwab started with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department this month, serving more than four years with the Martinsville Police Department. Sheriff Myers also said she is an Army reservist and described her as a “veteran officer.”

“I’m just so thankful to God that she’s healthy,” Sheriff Myers said during a news conference at the hospital. “We were all breathing a sigh of relief.”
