INDIANAPOLIS – State legislators will hear firsthand from cancer patients and survivors next week during Cancer Action Day. The day-long gathering draws cancer advocates from around the state to urge lawmakers to make ending suffering and death from cancer a priority.
This year, advocates will ask lawmakers to reduce the burden of cancer on Hoosiers by increasing access to biomarker testing, a game changer in the fight against cancer, and by continuing the conversation with lawmakers about prioritizing fact-based tobacco control measures. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in Indiana and the cause of over a third of Hoosier cancer deaths.

This year, an estimated 42,710 Hoosiers will be diagnosed with cancer and 14,280 are expected to die from the devastating disease. The legislature can and must do better to prevent and treat cancer in our state.
