Man found shot to death in Bloomington homeless camp is identified

BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup has identified the man who was found fatally shot in a Bloomington homeless camp.

The man has been identified as 52-year-old Curtis Butler of Bloomington. The cause of death was from a gunshot wound; a complete autopsy is scheduled for today.

The investigation continues.

On Tuesday, January 9, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Bloomington Police officers responded to the area of Wheeler Mission, located in the 200 block of South Westplex Avenue, after a report of a man who had been shot.

Upon arrival, bystanders directed officers to a homeless camp in a wooded area behind Wheeler Mission. Officers located a man inside a tent with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The victim was deceased upon the arrival of officers.

Individuals in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots just before calling 911.

No arrests have been made at this time. Police believe the victim and the shooter knew one another. Investigators will continue to follow up on leads to locate a suspect.
