Indiana Democratic Party statement on House Democratic Agenda

INDIANAPOLIS — Today, House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta unveiled Indiana House Democrats’ comprehensive policy agenda to bolster the Hoosier economy. As the Indiana General Assembly convenes, House Democrats are committed to fighting to improve the lives of Hoosiers in every corner of the state.

House Democrats’ “Economic Freedom Agenda” includes policies that benefit Hoosier workers, such as raising the statewide minimum wage to $15/hour and making union dues tax deductible. To help Indiana families, Democrats also hope to create tax credits to provide real property tax relief for homeowners, increase renters’ deductions, and pass fair housing protections. On education, House Democrats are advocating for bold long-term investments in students, including funding for universal pre-K and childcare tax credits. Finally, House Democrats look to protect Hoosiers by defending Medicaid and benefits for retirees.

Mike Schmuhl

“This visionary plan by House Democrats stops the Republican corporate handouts and invests directly in Hoosier workers and families. By investing in homeowners, renters, students, and retirees, House Democrats are putting Hoosier families first. As Republicans draft policy that benefits the ultra-wealthy and corporations, Indiana Democrats continue to advocate for the middle class and all Hoosiers who want a better tomorrow here in Indiana. From game-changing investments in childcare and early childhood education to championing reform to protect ratepayers, homeowners, and renters, this agenda is a complete roadmap to a vibrant and fair economy,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl.

“Hoosiers across the state are looking for responsible, transformative leadership that creates economic growth centered around the working families that make Indiana the remarkable place we call home. The unveiling of House Democrats’ economic policy agenda today showcases Democrats’ unwavering commitment to fulfill this responsibility. We are proud of Leader Phil Giaquinta and House Democrats and their tireless efforts to craft policy that works for Indiana. The 2024 election provides a choice for Hoosiers: more of the same or a new path that invests in and trusts working families — the backbone of our state,” Schmuhl continued.
