Man with two weeks left on probation back in jail on alcohol charges

BEDFORD – A Mitchell man was detained on alcohol charges on New Year’s Day after Bedford Police officers responded to the 1000 block of Hillcrest Drive apartments following a report of an altercation.

When officers arrived, Sgt. Toby Gerkin spotted a white Saturn SUV driving away from the scene. The driver had the high beams on, making it hard for the officer to see. Sgt. Gerkin stopped the driver near the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and 15th Street.

The driver was 20-year-old Logan Terrell of Mitchell. Terrell had suffered a bloody lip. He admitted to being involved in a fight with an unknown male at the apartments after he spoke poorly about Terrell’s girlfriend. Terrell declined medical attention.

Sgt. Gerkin said Terrell had been drinking. He was asked to step out of the vehicle. Terrell failed several field sobriety tests. Terrell got upset because he only had two weeks left on probation from a previous OWI charge and wanted officers to cut him a break.

Terrell was detained and transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw and then to the Lawrence County Jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI with a prior conviction, and Illegal consumption.

His vehicle was inventoried before being towed by Mikels Towing And Recovery LLC. During the inventory, officers found a bottle of Jim Beam Honey behind the passenger seat.
