A 13-year-old female strikes mother over a cell and is detained

BEDFORD – A 13-year-old female was detained on New Year’s Day after Bedford Police officers responded to a home in the 1000 block of H Street.

When officers arrived at 4:48 p.m., they were told the female took her brother’s cell phone and refused to give it back to him. The officers then witnessed the teen slam the door on her mother. The teen stated her mother struck her, and she felt the police never did anything about it. She told police she just wanted to stay somewhere else. She then handed the officer the cell phone, which started the argument.

Police then spoke to the teen’s mother, who said the teen had just got home from Bloomington Meadows Hospital at 3:00 p.m., and since being home, she has attempted to take her siblings’ electronic devices, which she is not allowed to have.

The mother then decided to call the police when she refused to return her brother’s cell phone. That agitated the teen, and she attempted to flee the house. When her mother and a sibling attempted to prevent her from leaving, she stuck both of them with a closed fist. She then ran to the back door and attempted to leave and struck her mother again in the face and jaw. The teen was detained on three counts of domestic battery and transported to the Bedford Police Department, where juvenile probation was contacted. They decided the teen would be transported to the Bartholomew County Youth Service Center. The Department of Child Services was also alerted.
