Stanley “Captain” J. Sommer, 85, of Bedford, passed away at his residence on Monday, December 25, 2023.
Born August 28, 1938, he was the son of Joseph and Katherine (Laber) Sommer. He married Mary Ann Hieger on May 5, 1962, and she survived.
Stanley graduated from Parkston High School and served in the United States Marines. He was a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the VFW, and the American Legion Gillen Post #33. He was a Traffic Manager for the U.S. Government and enjoyed golfing, spending time with his family, and being at the Bedford Boat and Sportsman’s Club.
Surviving Stanley, along with his wife, Mary Ann, is one daughter, Shelley (Dan) Meister; one son, Steven (Angie) Sommer; one grandson, Derek Sommer; one great-grandson, Kaiden Sommer; one sister, Eileen Miller; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Katherine Sommer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2023, at the Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father Terrance and Deacon Dave officiating.
