Bloomington City Council tables request to move police department to Showers Building

BLOOMINGTON — On Wednesday night, the Bloomington City Council unanimously denied the plans to sell the existing police headquarters and use the funds to move the department into the Showers Building.

The controversial issue for many concerned that the proposed new location would not give emergency vehicles enough room to exit and enter the property quickly if needed.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, descendants of the family who donated the land voiced concerns, saying selling the current police department building and its land to a private company violates the terms of the deed.

Mayor John Hamilton told the council there was no reservation for public use in the original deed dated 1923.

The council, however, voted to table the decision, saying they needed more time to consider the proposal.
