Obituary: Daniel William Dyke

June 3, 1954 – December 6, 2023

Daniel William Dyke, 69, a longtime resident of Bedford, IN, passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at the City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, CA following a lengthy illness.

He is preceded in death by his father Richard Warren Dyke, his mother Virginia (Van Meter) Dyke,
and brother Stephen Dyke.

Dan is survived by his wife, Sally (Byers) Dyke, and their two children: Jessica (Craig) Mackey of
Ladera Ranch CA and Jason (Mary Santos) Dyke of Cleveland, OH. He was a grandfather to 3:
Garren, Gavin, and Reagan Mackey.

He is survived by sisters Pamela (Dave) Blickhahn and Amy Dyke, and brothers Richard (Christine) Van Dyke and Timothy (Darlene) Dyke. He is also the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Dan was born in Indianapolis, IN on June 30, 1954. He attended Indiana University where he earned a B.S. in Biology, an M.A. in education, and an EDS degree. After college, he married Sally (Byers) Dyke. Dan was a firefighter, then transitioned into a 35-year career in education, serving as a science teacher and school administrator before retiring in 2017. While he loved all his students, the special education classrooms and children who were socially challenged held a special place in his heart. He also coached track, football, and baseball. Of all the jobs he held in his lifetime, his favorite role began in 2012 when he became a grandparent.

He treasured his time with his grandkids and loved being their papaw, and tried his best to never miss a softball, baseball, soccer, or basketball game.

Dan was an active member of First Baptist Church in Bedford, IN until relocating to California in 2018, where he became a member of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, January 6 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 1515 20th Street, Bedford, IN 47421. A celebration of life will be held immediately after at 11:00 a.m. A second service will take place on Saturday, January 13 at 11 a.m. at Saddleback Church at 1 Saddleback Parkway, Lake Forest, CA 92630 with interment held afterward at El Toro Memorial Park at 25751 Trabuco Rd, Lake Forest, CA 92630.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to in Daniel’s memory BatCole Foundation or the
Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County.
