Stars split meets with New Albany

NEW ALBANY – Bedford North Lawrence won seven events while topping New Albany during boys high school swimming action on Saturday.

The Stars posted a 101-79 victory in the boys meet, while the Bulldogs claimed the girls meet by a 105-78 count.

BNL’s Oliver Brown was a double winner for the Stars, taking the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.79) and 100 free (54.49). He also teamed with Garrett Gabhart, Isaiah Eicle and Carson Puckett to touch first in the 200 medley relay (1:51.25).

Other winners for the Stars included Gabhart (57.72 in the 100 backstroke), Eicle (5:31.80 in the 500 free), Jayden Duke (1:11.65 in the 100 breaststroke) and the 200 free relay (Isaiah Conner, Dustin Haltom, Puckett and Duke in 1:46.71).

“Jayden Duke had the kind of day I have been waiting to see from him,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “Great swims in the 100 free and 100 breast. We are going to need more of that going forward, lot’s more. Oliver Brown had a super leg in the medley to get things going. Garrett Gabhart is definitely back from his sprained ankle. He had some great swims today, with season bests in both his individual events.”

In the girls meet, BNL won five events. Cookie King claimed the 100 butterfly (1:08.46), Ava Lipp was first in the 100 back (1:08.17), and Amelia Rich took the 500 free (7:06.54). The Stars were also victorious in the 200 medley relay (Lipp, Emma Heinzman, King and Mia Manke in 2:12.42) and 400 free relay (King, Manke, Heinzman and Lipp in 4:30.51).

“New Albany had just a little more than we did,” Young said. “The ladies did a great job today.  We started out in a 10-point hole from diving and just couldn’t make it up. There were a lot of PRs across the board.  Our new swimmers continue to increase their contributions. Amelia Rich had a good race in the 500.”

BNL will visit Jennings County on Tuesday.
