Concerned citizen call results in teen arrest on auto theft and drug charges

BEDFORD – A Kokomo female runaway was detained Wednesday after the Bedford Police Department received a report of three people pulled over on Austin Drive in a grey Honda CRV.

The caller reported three people exited the vehicle with backpacks and walked down the street.

The three walkers denied getting out the vehicle when Officer Justin Dodd first approached them. They stated they had just left the Super 8 Motel and the officer let them go. Officer Dodd checked the vehicle and determined the vehicle was stolen.

Officer Dodd was able to catch up with one of the walkers on Kenny Simpson Lane between 39th Street and Grace Full Gospel Church.

Captain Drew Lemke arrived and detained two adult males who were walking to Industrial Boulevard.

The 16-year-old female told police the two males did not know the vehicle was stolen.

Police contacted the female’s mother in Kokomo who told police she didn’t know the girl had stolen her vehicle or had run away. She requested to file charges which she did at the Kokomo Police Department.

The 16-year-old was detained on charges of theft of a vehicle, runaway, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

One of the males told police he had posted a request on social media that he needed a ride and the female teen answered his request. The male said she picked him up and they drove to a shelter in Indianapolis and picked up the second male. Then they drove to Bedford, home to one of males father.

It was at this time the female teen informed the males she had stolen the vehicle and that she needed to ditch the vehicle.

The males were released and the female was transported to the Bedford Police Department. The vehicle was towed by Jacksons Heavy Haul.

Inside the female’s backpack police found pills, marijuana, and a smoking device.

The female was transported to the Howard County Probation Department.
