Mitchell City Council votes down trash rate increase

MITCHELL – A proposal to increase the trash pickup fees in Mitchell was defeated Monday night during the Mitchell City Council meeting.

Councilwoman Vicky Schlegel stressed officials can’t raise fees if officials don’t know the cost of the new toters and the cost of the new trash truck. Councilman Daniel Talbott agreed.

Council members George James and Perry Reynolds voted in favor of the fee increase.

Due to a tie vote, Councilman Larry Caudell who ran the meeting in the absence of Mitchell Mayor Nathan Jenkins could not break the tie.

The new proposed fees included the following:

  • Fees in 2024 would increase by $3 – $13 for residential and $23 for businesses
  • Fees in 2025 would increase to $14 for residential and $24 for businesses
  • Fees in 2026 would increase to $15 for residential and $25 for businesses.
