Historical plaque to be placed on Bridge 172

BEDFORD – On Tuesday morning, the Lawrence County Commissioners heard from Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb who reported work continues on Bridge 172 over Leatherwood Creek.

Design plans for work on the bridge on Cement Plant Road, replacing the bridge and road realignment, have been submitted.

Bridge 172 – This reinforced concrete girder bridge was constructed in 1909. The bridge is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Webb reported she had heard back from the Federal Highway Administration and the National Register of Historic Places and they have determined demolition and rebuilding the bridge is the best option. A historical sign will be erected at the site.

The bridge will now be replaced for $305,023.30 with bidding in November 2025.

Work continues on Bridge 36 on Locust Road, just west of State Road 446.

The 1999 bridge spans the South Fork of Leatherwood Creek. The bridge was deemed structurally deficient in a past bridge inspection.

“Crews are pouring the deck this week,” added Webb. “We still have about two more weeks of work before the bridge will reopen.”

Highway crews are stock-piling winter supplies on hills in the county and cutting brush.
