INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana State Troopers are investigating two separate crashes within the past 24 hours that resulted in two people being struck and killed on I-465.
The first crash happened early Sunday morning, November 19 at approximately 5:15, on I-465 northbound at the 17.6 mile marker. 32-year-old Tyler Stephenson of Brownsburg was walking across I-465 when he was struck by a vehicle.
The driver of that vehicle then crashed into the concrete median wall and suffered minor injuries. Stephenson suffered fatal injuries in the crash. At this point, it is unknown why Stephenson was walking on I-465.
Per Indiana State Law, the driver of the vehicle submitted to a chemical test for impairment, those results are pending however investigators do not believe impairment is a factor in this crash.
The second crash happened this morning, November 20 at 5:10 a.m., on the ramp from I-465 westbound to Allisonville Road.
A preliminary investigation at the scene revealed the following information. A semi-tractor trailer was westbound on I-465 approaching Allisonville Road when the right front wheel and tire detached from the semi. The driver of the semi pulled into the gore point between the ramp lanes and the main line. The wheel from the semi was approximately 30 yards behind the semi in the right lane.
A westbound vehicle struck the wheel, causing the wheel be become lodged under the car. The vehicle then struck the driver of the semi who was standing outside near the front right side of the semi-tractor.
The driver of the car was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected as a contributing factor in this crash.
The driver who was struck was transported to an area hospital, and despite life-saving efforts they were pronounced deceased. The identity of the deceased driver from this morning’s crash is being withheld at this time to allow time for family notifications.
The westbound I-465 ramp lane to Allisonville Road was closed for nearly three hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.
These two incidents are unrelated to one another and happened in two separate areas nearly 19 miles apart.
