BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence’s Jorj Filler, Ethan Stancombe and Tate Tanksley all went undefeated in five matches during the season-opening Super Six Duals at BNL Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Stars went 1-4 in the team competition. BNL edged North Harrison 39-36 in its opening match, then suffered setbacks to Mooresville (48-24), Silver Creek (48-35), Perry Meridian (36-34) and Washington (42-30) while forfeiting five weight classes.
Stancombe won four matches on the mat at 165 pounds, defeating Mooresville’s Gavin Gott 9-3, dominating Silver Creek’s Jacob Losey 16-2 in a major decision, stopping Perry Meridian’s Jaylen Porter 10-2, and pinning Washington’s Oliver Roe.
Filler conquered five opponents (four by pin) at 120. He opened with pins of North Harrison’s Sullivan Bray, Mooresville’s Logan Wilson and Silver Creek’s Caden Johnson, then won a tense battle with Perry Meridian’s Eli Rossman by a 6-3 decision. He finished with a pin of Washington’s Holden McCarthy.
Tanksley posted five pin wins at 190. He flattened North Harrison’s Brett Benkowski, Mooresville’s Hunter Phillips, Silver Creek’s Aiden Shaw, Perry Meridian’s Vantha Bya and Washington’s Xavier Leisure.
Other BNL competitors with strong opening matches included Jaxon Powell (four wins at 175), Wyatt Philpott (four victories at 113) and Connor Roberts (three wins at 215).
The Stars will compete in The Gobbler tournament at Southport on Nov. 25.
