Mitchell High School Band and Stingerz dance team granted varsity letters

MITCHELL – Monday night, the Mitchell Community Schools board approved the varsity letters for both the Mitchell High School Band and the Stingerz Dance Team, qualifying the band and dance team as MCS’s official teams in both the musical and dance sectors.

MCS Superintendent Dr. Brent Comer

“The board chose to recognize the hard work and dedication of Band and Dance team members and approved the rewarding of letters for their work.  These students follow the same ECA guidelines as our student athletes and are now receiving their “Letter’.” said MCS Superintendent Dr. Brent Comer.

Amos Wegner, the Mitchell Community Schools Athletics Director

Amos Wegner, the Mitchell Community Schools Athletics Director, explained the significance of this change to WBIW:

“It’s essential to note that while these activities may not fall under the conventional definition of sports, they undeniably exist within the realm of the arts. We aim to celebrate and recognize the hard work and commitment of these teams without limiting them to a specific label.

The recognition of these students is not just a matter of awarding varsity letters; it is about acknowledging their role as representatives of Mitchell Community Schools and the broader community. They have consistently exemplified dedication, hard work, and excellence, making us proud.

I look forward to seeing this initiative come to life and witnessing the positive impact it will undoubtedly have on our students and the community as a whole.”

MHS Stingerz Dance Team

The list of dance competitions for the Stingerz, including a handful of over-night stays for certain competitions, was also approved.

The competition list was only recently presented with openings to the dance team, which is why the list has come up this late in the fall semester.

Varsity Letters

Varsity letters are a symbol of performance and excellence at the varsity level and are awarded once certain standards of excellence and quality are met. Varsity teams are the principal team representing a high school in a sport or other competition.
