Two found asleep in vehicle arrested

OOLITIC – On Thursday, November 9th, around 2:40 a.m., Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Kenton Carter stopped to check on a parked, but running, vehicle along Oolitic Road, south of Lafayette Avenue.

James Day

Officer Carter had observed the same vehicle, in the same place almost three hours earlier as he had driven by on his way to another detail. Upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Carter observed a male driver, 37-year-old James Day, and his female passenger, 44-year-old Chrystal Lester, both of Bedford asleep inside the vehicle.

It took Officer Carter multiple attempts to wake them. When they did wake both were disoriented and confused.

The officer then discovered Day was wanted on an active warrant in Orange County.

Capt. Harrison Fleetwood and Deputy Bailey Duprey arrived to assist in the investigation.

As Day was being placed into custody for the warrant, officers found Day had meth and drug paraphernalia.

During the encounter, Lester was observed removing something from her person as she attempted to drop it on the ground to conceal it. Officers discovered Lester had dropped a baggie containing more than three grams of methamphetamine.

Officer Carter arrested Day for the warrant, and charges of possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lester was arrested on a charge of possession of methamphetamine.
