Male suspect deceased after fleeing from police and crashing into a pond

PLAINFIELD – Tuesday, at 2:50 p.m., officers from the Plainfield Police Department were involved in a vehicle pursuit with the driver of a maroon Kia Optima that began in the 3100 block of Ronald Regan Parkway in Plainfield.

The officers were trying to stop the man for a traffic violation. The suspect refused to pull over and led officers on a chase.

The Kia struck another vehicle at the intersection of Ronald Regan Parkway and East Main Street but the suspect continued driving. There were no injuries reported as a result of that crash.

The pursuit continued east into Marion County and concluded near the intersection of Moon Drive and Girl School Road when the Kia left the road, struck a tree, and then overturned into a pond. Several officers who were involved in the pursuit entered the water and attempted lifesaving measures to rescue the driver, however, they were unable to free the man from the vehicle.

Divers from the Indianapolis Fire Department responded to the scene and recovered the remains of 19-year-old Jayden Armstead, of Indianapolis, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

At the request of the Plainfield Police Department, Indiana State Police Detectives were called to the scene to conduct an investigation into the incident. Along with detectives, Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists responded to investigate the crash. This request is standard procedure for the Plainfield Police Department when there is a death involving a police incident.
