Police find body, man detained on murder charge

BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington man is behind bars on a murder charge after Monroe County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a disturbance and found a deceased person with a gunshot wound to the head.

On Saturday, November 4, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to 5929 East State Road 45 near Unionville for an unknown disturbance.

Deputies later identified the male involved as Bryce Leighton, 34, of Bloomington. Neighbors also reported the individuals who reside at 5929 East State Road 45 often fight.

Deputies checked the residence and found a deceased individual with an apparent gunshot wound to
the head. Lying near the body, was an AR-15-style rifle, and a civilian-style stun gun/tazer were also
located.

The victim will not be identified until the family has been notified.

Leighton was transported to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation, and he
was later remanded into the Monroe County Correctional Center on a Level 1 felony charge of murder.

Currently, this is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division and
Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
