Obituary: Mary Ruth Tarr Merry

January 20, 1938 – November 2, 2023

Mary Ruth Tarr Merry, of Seymour passed away Thursday, November 2, 2023. She was born January 20, 1938, to John and Ruth Tarr in Orange County, Indiana.

She attended Leipsic Grade School and graduated from Orleans High School in 1955. She married David Merry in July 1958. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past July.  

They moved to the Seymour area in 1961, working in various factories before retiring from Seymour Middle School after 14 years of working in the cafeteria. Mary looked forward to Seymour Owls Athletics seasons starting up. She enjoyed meeting people while working at both Seymour High School and Seymour Middle School events. Mary enjoyed baking and sharing her baked items with friends when visiting the nursing home. She also looked forward to driving cars for Poynter Chrysler Dodge and Family Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram with David. Monday through Friday, Mary and David met with the “breakfast club” at Burger King. She was a member of Emmanuel Church, Seymour Campus. 

Surviving to cherish her memories are her husband of 65 years, David, her daughters, Pam S. (Gary) McKay and Sonja K. (Rick) Followell, grandchildren, Sonya McIntosh, Daniel McIntosh, Meigan Vest (Josh), all of Seymour and grandson Spencer Smith (Abbie) of Polk, Nebraska, great-grandchildren, Maci, Jayden, Sophie, Tenley, Lincoln, Kenzlee and Sutton and great-great-grandson, Ivory as well as several nieces and nephews. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Betty and Barbara, her brother, John and two grandsons, Carmen and Mitchell Smith 

Friends may visit with Mary’s family from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Burkholder Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, 419 N. Chestnut Street, Seymour and from 10:00 am until service time at 11:00 am Monday at Emmanuel Church, Seymour Campus 1849 1st Avenue, Seymour. Pastor Andy Schroeder will officiate. Interment will follow at Reddington Cemetery.
