Local law enforcement – get everyone back home safely this Halloween

LAWRENCE CO. – Halloween is here and Lawrence County is preparing to be overrun this evening by thousands of little vampires, witches, ghosts, goblins, Barbies, superheroes, princesses, and probably a handful of Hulk Hogan’s.

As you head out with your children, family, or friends this evening to go trick-or-treating, please remember that safety is of the utmost importance! A little preplanning and discussion with the kiddos will serve our communities well and get everyone back home safely.

Please keep in mind the following safety tips offered by the Indiana State Police, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Bedford Police Department, Mitchell Police Department, and Oolitic Town Marshall’s Office to ensure a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat experience for everyone:

  1. Know your community’s set times for trick-or-treating, and respectfully abide by those times.
  2. Make sure that you have a flashlight, glow stick, or other reflective material on the children’s costumes so that they are visible to passing motorists.
  3. Children should be accompanied by an adult or use the buddy system while trick-or-treating.
  4. Please walk on the sidewalks, not on the roadway, and always look both ways before crossing the road.  *Look twice!!
  5. Only go trick-or-treating at houses where the front porch light is on.
  6. NEVER ENTER THE HOUSE OF A STRANGER.
  7. If and when children get lost or separated while trick-or-treating if they don’t have a cell phone, have them stay put where they are and ask another adult for help.
  8. Motorists- slow down in neighborhoods and use extreme caution. Be prepared for the unexpected. Children do not pay attention and undoubtedly will run out into traffic.
  9. Parents- Always inspect your child’s candy before consumption to ensure their safety. Any evidence of malicious tampering should be reported to law enforcement.
  10. And last but not least….. Have FUN and enjoy the Halloween festivities!
