Toddler dies in car crash, two children seriously injured along with the driver

JENNING CO. – A 3-year-old child has died as the result of a crash on County Road 1000 West, south of County Road 200 North.

The accident was reported at 8:16 p.m. Saturday.

According to a news release from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, when officers arrived they found a 2016 Nissan Rouge, driven by Lisa Ely, of Seymour had been traveling north on County Road 1000 West when it left the right side of the road and struck a culvert. The vehicle then went airborne and struck a tree. The Nissan came to a stop on the west side of the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2016 Nissan Rogue that had been involved in a single-vehicle crash.

As a result of the crash, Thomas Ely, 3, sustained fatal injuries.

A male juvenile and a female juvenile sustained serious injuries and were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour before being transported to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis for further treatment.

The toddler and the two juveniles were not properly restrained, police said.

Lisa Ely was transported to Schneck for treatment before being transported to an Indianapolis area hospital for additional treatment.

This investigation is ongoing, and toxicology results are pending, police said.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers and parents of the importance of ensuring their children are properly restrained in the proper equipment for their age.

Assisting at the scene were Rescue 20, Spencer Township Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, and Seymour Police Department.
