Obituary: Beverly S. Kern

May 8, 1937 – October 14, 2023

Beverly S. Kern, 86, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 1:45 a.m. at IU Health Bedford Hospital.

Born May 8, 1937, she was the daughter of Elmer and Mary (Taylor) Walker. She married Louis “Corky” Kern on March 9, 1954, and he survives. She was a sales clerk at JC Penny and a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. She had also been a Pink Lady Volunteer at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital, a former member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority, and former 4-H Leader. Beverly was known for her extraordinary seamstress skills having made BHS Cutterette and BNL Cheer uniforms for many years, in addition to her daughters’ wedding dresses, homecoming and prom dresses, and countless other wedding and bridal party dresses for friends. She made sure she taught her daughters the art of sewing and encouraged them to participate in 4-H clothing projects and other regional sewing competitions. For many years, Beverly also operated a ceramic shop in her home, using her artistic talents to instruct others in the painting and design of ceramic products. She and Corky were constant supporters of all interests of their children which carried over into their grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. Although Beverly was not a great sports enthusiast, she rarely missed a basketball, football, baseball, softball, golf, or volleyball game to cheer on her family members. Often she could be seen knitting or crocheting in the stands while watching her family participate. She loved her family well.

Survivors include her high-school sweetheart and husband of over 69 years, Corky Kern of Bedford; two daughters, Teresa Saunders and Susan Gales; grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Anderson, Angela (Chris) Pedersen, Andrew (Kelsey) Kern, Bethany (Chris) Bell, Jordan (Mindy) Morris, Chris (Amy) Gales, Rachel Gales and Katy (Zac) Holmes; twenty great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark Kern; a grandson, Dylan Kern, and son-in-law, Roger Gales, her brother, Eugene Walker, and his wife Joan.
