County Council adopts largest budget in Lawrence County history

LAWRENCE CO. – Thursday evening, the Lawrence County Council met and approved the largest budget the county has ever seen.

Totaling $35.7 million dollars, the 2024 budget went through multiple hearings, where cuts and changes were made at the discretion of the elected council.

  • General Fund: $20,011,544
  • Grant Fund: $14,487,735
  • Fee Fund: $1,207,010

Total 2024 Budget: $35,706,289

Budget hearings were held throughout the month of September, with major changes made in several areas.

Most notably, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department budget received a raise to support the officers, bringing their pay closer to that of similar departments throughout the state.

The council had to balance minimizing taxes with sustainably maintaining fair pay for employees. With the inflation of the last few years, this has been no easy feat. To facilitate such raises in the budget as the Sheriff’s Department, cuts were made elsewhere where they were least needed.

Lawrence County Council President Jeff Lytton expressed his thanks for the dedication of all members of the council, as well as other county and city officials who put their time and care into the process.
